A quiet afternoon in Dothan turned into a heartbreaking tragedy when 39-year-old Brittney Alise Henderson was fatally shot on the back porch of her home in what authorities are calling a โterrible act of violence.โ
Dothan Police Chief William Benny confirmed that officers were dispatched to the 400 block of East Spring Street shortly after 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday following reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found Henderson deceased, suffering from a single gunshot wound.
The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Vincent Phillips, is a neighbor of Hendersonโs. According to Chief Benny, Phillips and Henderson only knew each other in passing. The preliminary investigation revealed that Phillips approached Henderson while she was sitting on her porch, and after a brief interaction, he pulled a firearm, aimed it at her, and fired a single fatal shot.
Phillips fled the scene before law enforcement arrived but was later apprehended and is now in custody. He has been charged with capital murder and is currently being held without bond in the Houston County Jail.
โAt this point, there are several avenues of investigation that need to take place,โ Chief Benny said. โIn the coming days, investigators will continue to pursue leads in determining the motivation for this terrible act of violence.โ
The Dothan Police Department has pledged a thorough and diligent investigation to uncover all circumstances surrounding the killing. Chief Benny emphasized the departmentโs commitment: โInvestigators will work tirelessly to determine all the circumstances surrounding this crime.โ
